Whole Foods Update

I previously wrote a guide to shopping at Whole Foods because it's cheap for some things. Later, I bought a big basil plant. Here is an updated guide.

I went to Whole Foods today because Chase Freedom's 5% back on groceries quarter ends next week and I wanted to buy 3 liters of olive oil. I got both extra firm and silken tofu because it's $1.79 for organic (they don't have non-organic). Tofu is at minimum $2.50 everywhere else. I got frozen spinach for $1.79 because it's usually $2 elsewhere. Food Bazaar was supposed to have 2 lbs for $2.50 this week but they were out of everything. I also got arborio rice for $3. I don't know if that is a good price.

The other stuff is from Mr. Piña, which I should write about more often. The pineapple was $1.49, the zucchini was $0.50, the peppers were 2/$1 and the bag of lemons, which contains 3, was $1.

Fifteen Years in My Apartment

Today (the 11th, not now when it is after midnight) was the 15 year anniversary of when I moved in. I invited some friends over and 2 friends came. And 1 roommate was here. I made baked ziti because that is what I would have made 15 years ago and because I completed my Italian course on Duolingo today too.

I went to Western Beef (ricotta, campanelle), Ozzie's (nothing), Key Food (nothing), Green Corner (3 lbs of ground beef), Bravo (nothing), Ozzie's (nothing), Key Food (spinach, genoa salami*), Jesus (nothing). I was outside a lot..

*At Key Food there was a sign saying they had a $5.99/lb sale on Genoa and hard Magnifico (the brand) salami). So I thought I'd have some antipasti and asked for a half pound of both. The guy said he was out of hard, so I said just give me Genoa. Then he did, and it was Boars Head and was $10.99/lb. I had already walked to 40 stores to save $1 on frozen spimach, so I didn't just accept it. I said he gave me the wrong one. He said "oh, I was out of hard salami."  (That isn't what happened!) but he did print out a new sticker to give me the correct price on the salami I did get.

I was going to get a 1/2 pound of Stella provolone ($5.99/lb) too, if he had asked me "anything else?" but he didn't so I saved either $3 or a random amount of money depending on how he cut cheese.

Fun with Leftovers: Bean soup

I had some things sitting around that were probably going to go bad soon if they hadn't already. I had beans I had soaked and cooked, a hoagie roll from Saturday that was a bit stale, and some pork juice Lewis gave me when he used his pressure cooker to make a pork butt last Thursday. I thought that'd make a good soup if I could find some frozen mustard greens or something at Key Food. I ended up getting spinach because it was on sale and the bags of mustard greens were too big and I don't know what else I'd do with them.

$1 for that box. I just plopped it in the pot with the pork juice and added the previously cooked beans at the end to reheat them.

I'll put the picture of the pork juice behind the jump, lest you gag.
