What's on Sale? I'm back from Mexico

 I've been back for over a week, and I have been to stores, but I still feel like I don't have anything I can eat yet. Last night I went to Trader Joe's and then ate cottage cheese for dinner. Before Mexico, I just kept eating Mexican food and in Mexico I ate Mexican food. I might end up just eating more of that. I also met my new credit card's sign up bonus so now I can go back to using the right card at grocery stores. Time to see what's on sale this week.

Bravo: Honeycrisp apples for $1/lb. I eat a lot of apples, celery, and cheese. Tomatoes are $1.49/lb but I don't trust them to not be pink.

C-Town: Also tomatoes. Slightly less likely to be pink at C-Town. Pork chops for $2/lb.

Food Bazaar: Tomatoes are $1.29 here but they're definitely pink.

Foodtown: Seltzer is 5/$3 for 1 liter bottles. Should I buy a gallon of Tide for $8? I just bought laundry balls from Amazon and I could start leading a fancy laundry life. London broil is $4/lb.

Green Corner: they didn't update yet

Ozzie's: Peanut butter 2/$4. Heirloom tomatoes are $3/lb. At least they won't be pink.

I need to go buy groceries after being away for a week

 I don't even know what might be on sale because I haven't looked at circulars for 2 weeks (the week before the trip I needed to eat all my inventory). I am very hungry right now, so I hope I find things. Also my trip made me fat, so I hope I find healthy things.

Bravo: Frozen vegetables are 3/$4 for 14 oz bags. Those are good for fried rice. Big cans of tomato paste are 3/$7 but I'm not made out of math to divide things by 7. Seems more expensive than when they used to be 3/$6 though, so I'm not buying that out of spite. Frozen spinach is $1.5 for 14 oz.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: A 12 pack of Sixpoint Hard Seltzer is only $10. I wish they sold the cucumber ones separately because those are great and the rest are ehhh. A pound of hummus is $4, which seems like a good price, but I will just make my own. That's a good idea. Cabot Greek yogurt is $5 for 2 lbs. I haven't bought greek yogurt in a while and I can't remember if I like that brand. Bac'n bits are $2.5, which I could use for the 4th of July.

C-Town: Romaine is $1.49/lb. This is mostly a repeat of Bravo.

Food Bazaar: Limes are 9/$2. Corn tortillas are $1.5. Mussels are finally on sale! 

Scallions are 5 bunches/$2 and I should get some because mine all died when I was away. So did almost all my other food in my window boxes.

Ozzie's: Heinz BBQ sauce is $2 but nowhere ever has Carolina which is the best one. A whole cauliflower is $2.5.

Green Corner: nothing

Western Beef: nothing

I guess I should go to Mr. Piña, which doesn't have a circular that I know of.

Beefsteak tomatoes and kaiser rolls

 I saw that Ozzie's had beefsteak tomatoes on sale for $0.99/lb so I went there for lunch yesterday. I couldn't find any though because they were either out or a guy stocking the shelves was hiding them. Instead I just got 2 boxes of 100 tea bags each for $2 each.

I went today before breakfast to try again. I did find them. I also got 2 kaiser rolls for $0.40/each. The bread area is so well stocked in the morning! I never go there then. I took the plastic bag I put my last bread purchase in because I still had it and I don't want more plastic in the world.

So now I have my lunch planned. Maybe some of my window herbs are big enough to harvest for a tomato sandwich. Or I can cut up my Vidalia onion.

A duck. What to cook with a duck. Side dishes for duck.

 The backstory is I got a frozen duck from Gideon for my birthday in December. It is too luxurious to eat by myself, so I stuck it in the freezer. Now it's April and the Omnicron wave around my the end of the year has subsided, the weather is nicer, and it is time to cook a duck.

The first problem with my meal plan is the flip side of it being too lonely to eat a fancy duck by myself. I started by inviting Yasmin. Then I invited Matt and Emily because they also gave me lot of fancy ingredients for my birthday (most of which I still have, and may incorporate into the meal). And I had to invite Gideon of course, but he hasn't told me if he will come. Also, roommates. So I am dealing with not a lot of duck per person and also a lot of uncertainty about how many people I even need.

Two people have suggested I make Peking duck. I do not know how to make this. I am not really sure how to make any duck (that is the point of Gideon's gift.. he gets me weird things I have to figure out). But I especially don't know how to make Peking duck.

I currently think I will make a large amount of some sort of risotto (that was a gift from Matt & Emily) as a first course, then a small serving of duck with a side of some vegetables as a second course. This is basically the Italian meal style. Which means I could flesh it out with an antipasto course. My main risotto ideas are either mushroom (risotto ai funghi), saffron (risotta alla milanese) or to be very weird, strawberry (risotto alle fragole). This one for orange risotto sounds good too. (risotto all'arancia)

The point of this blog post is to take notes while I look through all the grocery circulars to see what is on sale this week and maybe come up with ideas. The title of the blog post was accidentally SEO bait and then I thought it was funny so I made it more baity.

Bravo: Asparagus $2/lb. Mozzarella $3. They don't list them on sale, but they sell bulk white mushrooms for $3/lb which is a pretty good price and I could use a ton of those with a few porcini (gift from Matt & Emily).

Brooklyn Harvest Market: Asparagus. Mozzarella.

C-Town: Asparagus. Mozzarella. All the sales are the same this week. Escarole $2/lb.

Food Bazaar: Lemons 5/$2, but I'm not dealing with that whole store for that.

Ozzie's: Asparagus. Mozzarella is 2/$4 (must buy 2) so at least that is a little different. And ricotta is only $3.

Green Corner: Strawberries $2/lb. Lemons 5/$2 (I will go here just for that).

My Planned Menu

Antipasti: various olives, some cheeses, giardiniera, roasted red peppers, and maybe some sort of crackers

Primo: Risotto ai funghi

Secondo: Orange duck (anatra all'anatra)

Contorno: Escarole or arugula salad with strawberries, gorgonzola

Where's the tea?

 I'm out of tea bags. I make a pitcher of iced tea every night before I go to sleep and go through 4-6 bags a day. Dollar Tree tea isn't good enough, but store brands are good enough and name brands are good enough. Since I am specifically looking for that, I might as well write about what else is on sale everywhere this week.

Bravo: Canned clams are $1.99. I like when they are $1.69 though. Heinz bbq sauce is $2 but they don't carry the kind I want (Carolina). A blue cheese wheel is $6/lb, but I needed that last week and I still have gorgonzola after overpaying for it. No tea.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: What is wide meat?

Herbal teas are on sale ($3 for 20 bags) but I bought that for $2.50 earlier this week.

C-Town: This is the same stuff as Bravo.

Food Bazaar: Beans are $1/lb but I have been stocking up too much already. A dozen large eggs are $1.

Green Corner: Lemons are 7/$2. I could make limoncello but my roommate started drinking my spirytus and I think he's probably now dead. Lipton tea is on sale for $4 for 100 but that doesn't seem good enough.

Key Food: A cauliflower is $2. Mushrooms are 3/$5 for 8 oz. Heinz bbq sauce is also on sale here but they don't have Carolina either. Pepsi is 3/$4 for 2 liter bottles. I may just get some Super Pepsi for my caffeine to get me through the weekend. McCain frozen french fries are 2/$5 and I kinda want them. This ad says buttermilk is $1.69 but I don't believe it. A 15 pack of Natty Light is $10. Tetley tea is $3.49.. maybe I can do that.

Oh.

Ozzie's: Luigi Vitelli pasta is 88¢. Cauliflower is $2 here too. This circular seems too short. It probably has a lot of the same stuff as Key Food.

Western Beef: Everything is cheaper somewhere else.

So I guess I will go to Key Food (or Ozzie's?) for Tetley tea.

UPDATE: I went to Ozzie's for tea and Natty Ice. I almost got Bromley's for $3.29 but I decided to spend 20¢ more to see if Tetley's is great.

Pre 4th of July sales. What's out there?

This is the last full week of sales before the 4th. Next Friday, there will be some new ones but I will only have Friday and Saturday to use them. So this is an important one. My Chase Freedom card is going to give me 5% back on groceries starting July 1, so I am not doing my shopping until then except for daikon pickle, which should fester for a week. So actually, anything good I find here I have to buy all on Thursday.

So let's see what's out there.

Bravo: Peaches are 99¢. Corn is 40¢ per ear. Premio sausage is $3/lb. I wouldn't make that for the 4th, but I am making pizza tonight and it might be good. An 8 oz can of tomato sauce is 45¢. Fage Greek yogurt is $3 for 17 oz.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: Peaches are 99¢. Beefsteak tomatoes are $1.49. I hope I can find a better price. The sausages are $2.99 here too. Cafe Bustelo is 2/$5. Fage 17 oz is $3 here too, but Chobani 32 oz is $5. Hmm. Fage is better though. A can of tomato juice is $2.

C-Town: Peaches, corn, and sausage are all the same price here too.

Food Bazaar: A pound of mozzarella is 3/$10. (See, my dinner tonight). Limes are 9/$2. Scallions are 40¢.

What is on sale?

 Last week I put pictures in my post and they didn't show up. That's annoying.

Bravo: I don't know why I'm even looking. I went on Wednesday and bought 5 tins of anchovies but the store was so crowded I didn't look at anything else. They have Colavita pasta for $1, but I bought 5 pounds of that at Key Food on Wednesday. (It was a big shopping day for me.) Fage greek yogurt is $6. I didn't get my greek yogurt last week because Key Food was out.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: Beefsteak tomatoes are $1/lb. Hot dog buns are $1.25. Pepsi is 4/$5.

C-Town: Tomatoes on the vine are $0.99, but I would rather get Beefsteak across the street. Bill just texted me "Land o Lakes butter is on sale at C-Town. It's the best baking butter." So you can buy that if you want. I don't usually cover that topic here. Diet tonic water is 3/$2. C-Town usually has the best price on diet tonic water.

Food Bazaar: Mussels aren't on sale (I looked yesterday) but I will look at the rest now. A 3 liter can of Filippo Berio olive oil is only $12 which is a good price for a bad oil. Mozzarella is $3.34 which isn't bad. Cabot Greek yogurt is $4 for 32 oz. I should go there just for that and then see what mussels cost not on sale. I might go there right after this blog post! If mussels are a bad price I can get squids. Even though I'll get there too late to use my NYC ID and get 5% off.

Green Corner: Mussels are on sale for $3.49 for 2 lbs. That's too much. I would pay $3. Filippo Berio is $17 here and they spell it wrong in the ad. They also say calms are $8/dozen but show mussels. A 14 oz tofu is $1.79. I might get that.

Key Food: Peaches are $1/lb and beefsteak tomatoes are $1/lb so I will go here instead of BHM and then make a salad of those two things. Mushrooms are 3/$5. Coke products are 4/$5. Fage is $6, but I already decided on Cabot.

Ozzie's: They didn't update but they usually have similar sales to Key Food. Maybe I'll go get a paper circular. Or just buy the stuff there. No, their announcements are too annoying and I can't stand them anymore. I'll go to Key Food. It's too lonely to go to Food Bazaar and have mussels or squid without a plan for people to come eat them with me.

 I did a good job of eating lots of the ends of containers from my refrigerator, so I'm ready to shop!

Bravo: $0.79/lb for "slicing tomatoes" but Bravo's tomatoes are always pink so this doesn't count. I would stock up on these $1.69 anchovies, but I did that last time. So I should use some anchovies from my cupboard.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: A 2-lb bag of onions is $1.

C-Town: They also have tomatoes for $0.79/lb and I trust them. Mushrooms are $1.5 for 8 oz. The anchovies are $1.79 here.

Food Bazaar: I peeked yesterday but they didn't have mussels, so I am not going to look again because I'm not going to go there.

Green Corner: Tomatoes on the vine for $0.69/lb! Extra large eggs for $1.25 Oh, further down the ad the tomatoes get cheaper. 

Key Food: They still say a 3 lb bag of Vidalia onions is $2. I got a bag last week and they tried to charge me $5 so I corrected them. Colavita pasta is $1 so I will stock up I suppose. Both Cabot and Chobani Greek yogurts are $5 for 32 oz. I'll try Cabot because Chobani isn't as good as Fage and I don't know about Cabot.

I returned to Western Beef because it was over 80 degrees in March and I wanted to bike somewhere

I figured I'd get milk and giardiniera and whatever else I found. But the milk was $1.59 for a pint and I thought it should be $1.39 so I didn't get it. (Later I went to Ozzie's and paid $1.49). The giardiniera was on sale for $2 for a 32 oz jar. I got brown mustard for $1. Broccoli rabe was $1.99/lb and I will always buy it when it is that price.  Tuna was $0.80/can (I got 2).

I might as well write about my trip to Ozzie's later. I got that milk. Chick peas were $0.99/bag so I got 3 and am going to make hummus shortly. I got 32 oz of Chobani Greek yogurt. Fage is much better, but it was $3 for 17 oz so I got the cheaper one I like less which will last me too long since I like it less. I keep doing this. I got a bottle of Gatorade for $1 because I need to fight hangovers.

"Ohh, that saved you a lot!" -the cashier at Brooklyn Harvest Market

 I went today before the blizzard. I got 4 2-liter bottles of Coke products, 4 10-oz bricks of Cafe Bustelo, 2 jars of Skippy peanut butter, 2 bags of McCain frozen french fries, and 1 lb of Galbani mozzarella. That would have been just over $50, but I paid $21.

The pop was 4/$5 instead of $1.5 each. The coffee was $1.98 each instead of $4.99. The french fries were $1.50 instead of $5.19. The cheese was $2 instead of $6.49. The peanut butter was supposed to be $3.79 but was $2 and then I had a coupon.

I ate some of the beer-coated french fries for lunch and they were the best frozen french fries I ever had.

I forgot to get eggs or milk, just like I did when I went to Ozzie's yesterday. I can never make eggnog.

What's on sale? I'm hungry

 I think Christmas sales are already showing up. And Christmas Eve sales. Lots of fish.

Ozzie's: Jumbo eggs are 3/$5. I might have too many eggs now, especially considering how many eggs my roommates have. However, I have been baking a lot of cookies. Polly-O mozzarella and ricotta (32 oz) is $2.50. Yellow and red onions are $1/bag. They're never the same price. That's it I guess. They have a short circular. Last week, I saw Natty Ice on sale in the Key Food circular, but the store doesn't carry that. I went to Ozzie's, which does carry it and has the same sales, more or less, as Key Food. It wasn't in the circular and it wasn't labeled on sale in the store, but I bought it anyway and it was on sale! That's not ideal, but I liked it.

Green Corner: Chicken legs are $0.49/lb. Polly-o is on sale here, but for $3 (mozzarella) and $4 (ricotta). Mussels are $4 for 2 lbs. No comment:

Grapefruits are $0.50 each and serrano peppers are $1.39. Lemons are 7/$2. I hate that kind of math. I do it in my head as "6/$2, but a free lemon."

Brooklyn Harvest Market: I've already been looking at this one and am going there later, probably. I like their online coupons that go to my card. I'm disappointed that the Ibotta link doesn't work. 3 lbs of sweet potatoes or 5 lbs of regular potatoes for $1.50. Cafe Bustelo bricks (10 oz) for $1.98. I will buy the 4 maximum. I could buy 20 lbs of rice for $8.88, which is almost tempting me to become good at cooking rice. A 14 oz package of "stuffing mushrooms" is $2.50, which is pretty good. Galbani mozzarella is $2 and ricotta is $3. So I'll get the mozzarella here and the ricotta at Ozzie's, if I have room in my refrigerator. Coke products are 4/$5 but you have to buy 4. I guess I can handle that, if I make more than one trip here this week. McCain frozen onion rings and potatoes are 2 bags for $3 with the online coupon. I hope I have room in my freezer too! Two pounds of mussels go for $6.49 here. They're organic.

I got a 2 lb bag of frozen shrimp for $10 last week here, but I didn't write about it. Now I am.

Key Food: This is the other place I shop the most of late. That shrimp bag would be $14 here this week. "Fresh" mozzarella logs are $4. Cafe Bustelo is $2.50 here. Pepsi products are 4/$4 with a $10 purchase, but I don't know if I can reach $10. Polly-o is $2 for mozzarella (must buy 2) or $3  for 32 oz of ricotta. Colavita pasta is $1, so I might go there today instead of BHM because I want fettucine and meatballs. Yellow onions, but not red, are $1 here. Canned clams are $1.69/can. I would stock up, but I already stocked up because this was the sale 2 weeks ago and that price is so good. Usually they're about $2.49 or $2.69. Linguine and clam sauce is only a few minutes away when you have a can of clams. Hot cherry peppers are $2.50, which I might get so I don't have to bike to Western Beef.

You can get a 40 oz box of cleaned squid for $15. That is too much for me, but I like the idea.

Bravo: Cream cheese is $1.50 but I already have that.

C-Town: Cream cheese is $1.50, but I already have that and Bravo is closer to me.

Western Beef: nothing, unless i take a chance of saving $0.50 on cherry peppers

Food Bazaar: Coke is $1, but you can only buy 2. Which sounds better than having to buy 4... I should have gone when I walked by today. Mozzarella is $3 here. Cheese is never a good price here.

Oktoberfest during Covid?

 I haven't updated in so long that Blogger looks different now. Since Oktoberfest would start this weekend, I'm going to look at all the circulars and see if I could find things I would want to make. Even though no people will come. I can eat all the food myself.

Ozzie's: I've been shopping here a lot because American Express has been giving me $5 if I spend $10 at certain small businesses and this one counts. Mostly I buy beer. That ends this weekend and I have 1 trip left. Anyway.. Pork shoulder is $0.99/lb, which is a good start.

Key Food: Two pounds of onions for $1. One pound of baby bella mushrooms for $3. Pepsi proucts are 3/$4. Sour cream is $2. 

C-Town: Pork shoulder is $0.99/lb here too. Scalfani crushed tomatoes are $1.50, so I should get some. I only ever see Luigi Vitelli on sale and I did a test once and learned I like Scalfani a lot more. Colavita pasta is $1. I have so much pasta though. Maybe I should eat pasta more often since it's the only thing that makes me happy. Sour cream is also $2 here and cream cheese is $1.50. I've never seen Fage sour cream before, but it's also $2.

Bravo: Onions are $1 for 2 lbs here.

Western Beef: Pork shoulders are $0.79/lb but you have to buy 2. They also have chicken leg quarters for $0.29/lb but you have to buy 40 lbs. Life is far too lonely these days to buy 40 lbs of chicken. A six pack of English muffins is $1. That seems good, but I never buy English muffins so I don't know.

Food Bazaar: Here, English muffins are $2.50 for 6, so now I know.

Some of the things I bought today

 I haven't updated in a while. I guess I've been eating a lot of eggplants. Usually tomatoes get cheap in the summer, but I haven't seen many on sale and when they are, they are pink so I'm not going to buy them. I keep finding eggplants though. They are good on focaccia. Today at Mr. Plum, I got 3 for $1. I also got a seedless cucumber for $0.50 and 4 plums for $0.50.

Since I had already started making dough using my sourdough starter, I went to Ozzie's. I got a pound of Genoa salami for $6 and a fresh mozzarella log for $4. And I got 5 lbs of pasta for $4. The best part was that this counted as a small business for American Express's current small business promotion and I got $5 off.

I'd never pay $6/lb for regular meat, but then I do on salami. I guess my standards go out the window.

Yesterday I went to Western Beef and got a dozen medium eggs for $0.89, some pop for $1.25/bottle, 3 lemons for $1, and 3 green peppers for $0.99/lb. Then when I was walking home, the bus pulled up beside me, so I got on it. It was my first time on public transportation since the pandemic. It was free.

Shopping

I went to Key Food. Eggplant, zucchini, and plum tomatoes were on sale for $0.99/lb so I got them. Tonic was $0.67. That was in the circular, but labeled on the shelf. So I wonder if I should trust circular prices. They label the produce sales, but nothing else. I don't know why. Iceberg lettuce is also $0.99 so I might go back later this week.

I went to Ozzie's too and got white pepper and cranberry juice. They were both $2.99. I don't know what to do with white pepper.

I went grocery shopping for the first time in over 2 weeks

Key Food still publishes a circular, but they don't abide by it in-store. So of all the things I was looking forward to, only mushrooms were a good price. I left without buying anything because the lines were also long.

Since I had empty bags, I went to Ozzie's Fresh Market. I got popcorn, milk, and white bread. The shelves were stocked a little better and there were no lines at all.

Then I went to Jesus and got celery ($2) and a bag of 3 romaine hearts ($1). The romaine was the only good deal all day.

Fifteen Years in My Apartment

Today (the 11th, not now when it is after midnight) was the 15 year anniversary of when I moved in. I invited some friends over and 2 friends came. And 1 roommate was here. I made baked ziti because that is what I would have made 15 years ago and because I completed my Italian course on Duolingo today too.

I went to Western Beef (ricotta, campanelle), Ozzie's (nothing), Key Food (nothing), Green Corner (3 lbs of ground beef), Bravo (nothing), Ozzie's (nothing), Key Food (spinach, genoa salami*), Jesus (nothing). I was outside a lot..

*At Key Food there was a sign saying they had a $5.99/lb sale on Genoa and hard Magnifico (the brand) salami). So I thought I'd have some antipasti and asked for a half pound of both. The guy said he was out of hard, so I said just give me Genoa. Then he did, and it was Boars Head and was $10.99/lb. I had already walked to 40 stores to save $1 on frozen spimach, so I didn't just accept it. I said he gave me the wrong one. He said "oh, I was out of hard salami."  (That isn't what happened!) but he did print out a new sticker to give me the correct price on the salami I did get.

I was going to get a 1/2 pound of Stella provolone ($5.99/lb) too, if he had asked me "anything else?" but he didn't so I saved either $3 or a random amount of money depending on how he cut cheese.

Apple Pay

Since my trip to Wegmans on Sunday, I have been hooked on Apple Pay. It is so much faster than waiting for a chip to process, hoping the card is in there right, then often signing my name. Somehow C-Town is the only store that reads chips quickly.

I used Apple Pay at Whole Foods on Monday. I tried to use it at Ozzie's on Wednesday. Despite the sign saying "we have Apple Pay" and the annoying announcements that often mention having Apple Pay, it wouldn't work. Last night, I used it at Lincoln Market in Prospect Lefferts Gardens.

I like it so much that I think I better get my phone battery replaced so I can be sure I have it. So I need $50. Click on my ads and buy stuff!

Ozzie's Fresh Market on Yelp

Wegmans inspired me to write a review, and it didn't exist on Yelp before so I had to add it.

I gave it 4 stars.

Here's my review:

I went to that new Wegmans today and it just made me wish I stayed home and went to Ozzie's which is better in almost every way.

The fresh bread is a good price and good quality. Produce is good. The other week, every type of pear was on sale for 99¢/lb. London broil and chicken dark meat quarters are always good. This is my go-to spot for eggs. So many hot sauces. Best deli counter in the neighborhood. I like the cashiers; they are nice but don't talk to me too much and I don't want to talk too much. When people visit me from out of town, this is one of the places I bring them.

The absolute worst part of this store is the horrible announcements which read out prices of things that are on sale, then repeat them. Or quote Steve Jobs saying "the best part of having a team is everyone is smart" or something equally dumb. And I wish the online circular updated more reliably on time. This used to be an Associated, which I liked more. The announcements were still horrible then too though. You have to go to C-Town if you want to hear good things. But this store has better prices for most things.

The sales for the next couple days

I was in Pittsburgh this weekend so I haven't looked at grocery circulars yet. I came back with hatch chiles and a loaf of bread I like for sandwiches.

C-Town: Ajax dish soap is 69¢. Nice. Scalfani crushed tomatoes are $1.50. I can't remember if I like that brand.

Bravo: nothing

Key Food: Five pound bags of apples are 48¢/lb. 16 oz mushrooms are $2.98.

Ozzie's: they didn't even update it

Green Corner: They updated, but have nothing good.

Food Bazaar: 10 pounds of potatoes are $2.99. Nothing else is good, but if you are carrying 10 pounds it would be hard to buy much else anyway.
