A new grocery store! Grand Market!

I was looking for jobs today and I found out a new grocery store is opening around the corner for me. This will be the 5th grocery store within 4 blocks of my apartment. It's called Grand Market and it's at 247 Graham Ave, at the corner of Maujer.

Yellow Mustard

Heinz tried reintroducing yellow mustard and getting people to pair it with their more famous ketchup. I got a bottle at Associated when it came out. Today I was browsing the mustards there in anticipation for the 4th of July and I noticed it was gone. It's been replaced by 2 or 3 new flavors of French's yellow mustard, like a chipotle one and a brown sugar one.

Egg shortage!

Millions of chickens had to be killed because they had the flu and now there is an egg shortage. Regular eggs cost just as much as the fancy cage-free organic eggs I started buying during Lent: $3.79

Lucky trip to C-Town

I stopped in C-Town because I was buying duct tape and hair gel at the store on the block. They didn't seem to have anything I wanted so I walked to the exit, but it was blocked by a car and some people talking so I went to the entrance to leave. That's when I spotted some nice looking tomatoes for $0.69/lb. I wanted them, but I feel weird when I pay with a credit card and spend $3 or less, so I went walking to find something that was a good price that I needed anyway. That's when I spied a 3 liter can of Colavita olive oil on sale for $19.99! I thought I was running low on olive oil, but wasn't sure. It's too good a price to pass up and it lasts a long time in an unopened can. So that is what I bought.

I would have included pictures but Apple products are terrible and my phone Photos doesn't sync with my computer Photos anymore.

Post Lent

Lent's over. I could go back to buying cheap eggs if I want, but I figure I'll still buy cage free eggs to be nice to the chickens. I also have to try the farmer's market.

Yesterday at Associated I bought almost 7 lbs of chicken quarters for $0.49/lb. I imagine those chickens weren't treated very well. That is 7 lbs of chicken for less than the last dozen eggs I bought cost.

I'm inventing chicken noodle soup salad. It has cold chicken, raw celery, carrot, and onion, and some other stuff. It's not soup and it's not soupy. So far it's pretty good.

Expensive Eggs Update

I finished the last pack I wrote about this morning. They are no better than the cheap eggs. I also seem to have more trouble breaking them. The yolks break when I break them into a skillet. I don't know if that's because of the egg or because of me, but I'm blaming the eggs.

The only part I like more is the packaging. I prefer to recycle plastic over throwing away styrofoam. And I guess I like cage-free for the chickens' happiness.

I bought another dozen today. They are jumbo and cage-free but not organic, which didn't make them taste or look better anyway. They said they'd be $3.89 and they actually charged me that amount, which left me significantly happier than last time's shock.

I'll try farmers' market eggs too if I find some.

I gave up cheap eggs for Lent

I figured organic eggs might taste better, cage free eggs are nice for chickens, etc. And a bit more for eggs still isn't that much money compared to all the money I spend.

But now I'm starting to regret it. Associated had a sign saying these eggs were supposed to be $2.99 for a dozen. But they rang up as $4.49! That is so much per egg. And since I bring my own bag and pack my own groceries, I didn't see it until I paid. Maybe I'll just eat fewer eggs for a while.

A Pittsburgh price for pop

It's not often I can get 2 liters of pop in New York for under $1. But Associated was selling it for $0.89 if I spent $25. And I did because I wanted beef stew and fish tacos.

Amazon Fresh

Amazon Fresh delivers to my neighborhood in Brooklyn now. Temporarily, at least. So I am looking through prices. They're probably different in California.

-Limes are $0.50.
-You can get an organic avocado for $2.50, but what's interesting is you can get it either ripe or not ripe.
-Bananas are $0.49/lb, which is about the best price I can find in local stores.
-$1.39 for a can of clams. That's pretty good. Most other seafood has ok prices I guess.
-Herbs are bad prices.
-Eggs are expensive, but they've also been expensive at the store lately and I'm not sure what the going rate is.
-Lunch meat is expensive.
-Toilet paper is cheap.
-Pecorino romano is expensive. Over $14/lb
