But now I'm back. So what's on sale? I need kosher salt specifically. And I got a new sourdough starter for my birthday so I need to start buying flour again.

Bravo: I've mostly ended my feud with them. Other stores overcharged since then. Quartered chicken legs are 69¢/lb. Red onions are $2/bag.

C-Town: Boneless chicken tenderloins are $2/lb. I paid that for chicken breasts last week. I think this would just save me a cut before I turn them into shreds for tacos. Broccoli rabe is $3.

Food Bazaar: They charged me $2.49/lb instead of $1.49/lb for tomatillos so it will take an exceptional sale to make me return here, even though I need to go to their parking lot to recycle some clothes. Or maybe when I make hot pot and need shrimp. But nothing's worth it this week.

Foodtown: I wonder when the new Foodtown 1 block away will open so I don't go to the one 4 blocks away. I can get 50 pizza rolls for $4.49. I brought that many to a NYE party and people ate them all. They're a good food.

Green Corner: Dried hibiscus is $2 for 3.5 oz. My parents asked me to bring some for Christmas because it's easier to find here.

Ozzie's: nothing
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-9467487033800503462023-11-10T13:14:00.003-05:002023-11-10T13:14:42.804-05:00Is this fun or is this lonely?
I just bought 8 liters of Diet Coke and 50 pizza rolls.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-18858594588787085272023-11-02T21:20:00.003-04:002023-11-02T21:20:44.887-04:00Clearance Rack at Foodtown
They have a clearance rack where things are 50% off, but they don't tell you the original price so I never tried it. Yesterday I went grocery shopping on an empty stomach (the best time!) so I risked it by buying a can of black olives (Lindsay brand, not generic). They rang up as $1.60!

Today I went back and bought 7 cans of olives and 2 jars of hot banana pepper slices.

I took a picture, but "iCloud isn't syncing because you have no local storage" and "Mac needs to cool down."
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-45024260615086996012023-10-29T09:43:00.004-04:002023-10-29T13:50:34.876-04:00Back from Atlanta and I need coffee
I am almost out of ground coffee for the coffee machine. I still have unground coffee I use for my French press but I don't want to use that every morning. So I will look at the ads to see where I can go.

I generally buy Chock Full o' Nuts brand.

Bravo - I have a grudge against them now for always ringing me up wrong. Overcharging me for a 12 back of Presidente was the last straw. If I catch it, they'll fix it. But I don't want to have to be vigilant. And look, if someone who has written a blog about grocery prices for over a decade doesn't want to have to be vigilant about prices, you're doing something wrong.

C-Town - The C-Town took over the Bravo but I don't extend my grudge there. Candy corn is $3. I need candy corn! For coffee, they have Dunkin' and Maxwell House on sale, but it's not even a good price.

Food Bazaar - I don't think they even have coffee on sale.

Foodtown - I wonder when the second Foodtown that's even closer to me is going to open. Anyway, they have 4 lbs of wings for $10 but I got 5 lbs a week or so ago :-) A 10 oz brick of Café Bustelo is $4. That is winning so far, I guess.

Green Corner - Same Café Bustelo deal.

Ozzie's - Tofu is 3/$5. Dunkin' coffee is $7. Apples are 88¢/lb. Oh, just when I was going to give up, Chock Full o' Nuts is $4/can. Now my problem is solved.

Update: I went to Ozzie's and I also found chick peas for $1.50/bag (of 1 lb) so I got 4 bags. I was extra happy because they had the nut flavored Chock Full o' Nuts (Heavenly Hazelnut). Then I was confused because my bill came out low. The coffee was only $3/can.

I don't know whether to like Ozzie's even more and hold a stronger grudge against Bravo or to forgive all grocery stores because things balanced out for me personally.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-45565220403940745092023-10-22T08:13:00.001-04:002023-10-22T08:13:07.285-04:00Why Olive Oil Got So Expensive
It's not just Whole Foods scamming me. But I didn't look yesterday, so I guess I will today. I have eaten nothing but soup since Sunday so I am eager for new foods. I have been buying foods though. I got 2 cans of chipotles in adobo for $2.29 each and a can of whole jalapeños for $1.25. They tried to overcharge me but they fixed it. I can shop at Green Corner again because I have the Savor One card I wrote about in my last post. I also went to Food Bazaar and got crema mexicana for $3, queso fresco for $4, and 5 lbs of wings for $10.

Also, I'm going to Atlanta for 4 days this week so I can't plan to buy or cook all that much.

Bravo: Iceberg lettuce for $1.49 for my tacos and tostadas.

C-Town: Tomatoes are $1/lb but I am worried they would be pink.

Food Bazaar: A 2 pound bag of squid tentacles is $10.

Foodtown: Morningstar Farms frozen fake meat things (like chicken nuggets) are $4 and you can get $0.75 off using Ibotta.

Green Corner: Nothing.

Ozzie's: Iceberg lettuce for $1.49. It arrived today and I activated it.

It gives 3x on groceries and restaurants and entertainment and streaming. It gives 10x back on Uber/Uber Eats and a complimentary Uber One subscription (which is what I got it.. because my Amex Gold gives me UberEats money). It has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees and I think that means I can get 3x on grocery stores in Mexico. Seems like a good card. Maybe I will get a Venture X someday to complement this.

If you want to sign up for it, use my link.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-16308482372702478472023-10-16T17:54:00.000-04:002023-10-16T17:54:03.844-04:00Muir Glen Organic Canned Tomatoes
Bravo has big cans on sale for $1.69 so I bought 1 can yesterday and went back today and bought 6 more. I got diced, crushed, and whole. They tried to charge me $3.59 for the whole ones but I asked if they weren't on sale too and they checked and gave me the low price.

I haven't seen canned tomatoes for under $2 in ages.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-72901629859708487522023-10-05T08:21:00.005-04:002023-10-05T08:23:12.546-04:00Ending my grudge against Food Bazaar
They had shrimp on sale for $5/lb last week, so I went last night to get some to make green curry. And the shopping baskets were back. Now I can shop normally there. I also got a can of coconut milk for $1.25.

Shrimp are on sale again this week for the same price and extra large ones are only $6/lb so I could have waited. Or I could go back now that I am not mad.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-51854311842169669472023-09-17T18:33:00.001-04:002023-09-17T18:33:10.390-04:00Queso Fresco at Food Bazaar
Usually 12 oz of queso fresco is $5.49 but Food Bazaar had it for $3.99. I am mad at Food Bazaar because they got rid of their shopping baskets, but I figured I would go check to see if they brought them back. They did not, but the cheese was a good price.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-9340465794212946792023-08-27T12:24:00.005-04:002023-08-27T12:24:39.458-04:00What's on sale? I'm back after traveling
I've barely been around for a month and I wasn't shopping intensely before either of my trips. Now my refrigerator is fairly empty and I need to shop.

In Pittsburgh I did get banana peppers for 25¢ each and hatch chiles for $5 for 18 oz, so those are in my refrigerator and I need to use and/or freeze them. I can never find hot banana peppers in NYC.

Bravo White tuna is 3/$4

C-Town Cracker barrel cheese are $2.50 for 8 oz. Often I find deals on Ibotta for $1 back, which makes them $1.50 and quite a good deal. Jif peanut butter is $2.69, which after recent inflation, is a pretty good price. The tuna deal is here too.

Food Bazaar I'm still mad at them, but I will look because I might like to get salmon. In Pittsburgh at Giant Eagle, I got a piece of salmon for $6/lb and I dry cured it. It's $10/lb at Food Bazaar. Coke products are 3/$5 for 2 liter bottles. Can of coconut milk are 4/$5.

Foodtown (fka Brooklyn Harvest Market) London broil is $4/lb. A jar of mayo is $4. Pepsi 2-liters are 3/$5. Kraft shredded cheeses are $2 (and on Ibotta for another $0.50 off). Seltzers are 5/$3 per liter.

Green Corner Four pound boxes of shrimp for $3.50/lb.

Ozzie's Sardines 5/$4.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-27907326011110669082023-07-02T19:26:00.001-04:002023-07-02T19:26:05.379-04:00Brooklyn Harvest Market Changed Its Name to Foodtown
I couldn't find any differences though. And my BHM loyalty card still worked. It always had Foodtown branded things so who knows why they did this. Now I'm going to have 2 Foodtowns within 5 blocks of my apartment. I wonder if the same owners will run both or if there will be a difference.

I got so much Cracker Barrel and Kraft cheese because it was on sale and there were good scams on Ibotta so each 8 oz CB cheese was $1.50 and each Kraft shredded cheese was $2 after scams.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-83873852930109294892023-06-26T21:19:00.003-04:002023-06-26T21:19:38.945-04:00Foodtown Coming to Grand St in East Williamsburg
I just saw the sign. Now I need to go out and use it to replenish my refrigerator and freezer. I wonder what is on sale. I need kosher salt. Now that I am going to be around, I can attempt live herbs again.

Bravo: Krasdale frozen vegetables are $1.25 for 14 oz. I got some broccoli cuts last night. Colavita pasta is 3/$5. I'm not sure what shapes they have or what I need. A 24 oz container of kosher salt is $2.29 but I want a 3 lb box. Camaronazo is $3.29. That's like Clamato but based on shrimp instead of clams.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: Clamato is $3.50 here.

C-Town: Romaine is $1/lb. Frozen vegetables are 5/$4 for 8 oz bags. Mixed vegetable bags (like California Blend) are 3/$5 for 14 oz.

Food Bazaar: Nothing

Green Corner: Cilantro for $0.59! Limes 8/$2! Nopales $1/lb! I bought 5 kirby cucumbers ($1), 2 zucchini ($1), and a bag of grapes ($1) yesterday. I'm also trying to eat healthier. But then at night, friends brought over beer and potato chips so shopping healthier doesn't even work.

In Mexico, I probably won't buy groceries. Last time I went to a store and bought a bottle of Clamato because I love that stuff. I didn't like the lid on the bottle though. It was hard to screw back on.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-57444761245491927922023-01-19T17:59:00.000-05:002023-01-19T17:59:01.398-05:00Produce Prices Are High
It's January, so of course. A coworker might come over for dinner tomorrow. And I have some stuff from before my trip, but I should replenish. Also I'm hungry right now so I might come up with good ideas.

Bravo: nothing. well, white button mushrooms are always $3/lb there and you can get as few or as many as you want, so I still might end up going there.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: Frozen ravioli are 4/$5 for 13 oz. They would be good with the zucchini pesto I made before I left. Super Pepsi (the kind with the most caffeine.. aka Pepsi Zero Sugar) is 3/$5. Beef hearts are $3/lb. They don't usually have beef hearts.

C-Town: Butternut squash is $1/lb and I just remembered when I made a salad of it using it raw, with gorgonzola and nuts.

Food Bazaar: Nothing. Well, the apples for $1/lb inspired me, but I'm not going all the way there for just apples.

Green Corner: Lemons are 3/$1 and my coworker might want a cocktail that could benefit from lemon. Nothing else is remarkable.

Ozzie's: Lemons are 5/$2 here. Will I walk 0.75 miles each way to save 7 cents per lemon at Green Corner? (I don't know.. I might.) Canada Dry's family of pop is 3/$5. Which is grocery stores. And I got it just in time to spend $200 on groceries for the 4th of July.

Cheap hot dogs were harder to find this year. I got them at Dollar Tree. You can get 8 turkey or chicken hot dogs for $1.25. They are only 10 oz instead of 12 like most places, but I don't care. People want the condiments.

I can't get chicken quarter for less than $1/lb. Peaches were $1.49/lb at the best place I could find. Onions are $2/bag everywhere. Ketchup was $3.50. I got buns for $1/bag of 8, which isn't that bad. And a watermelon was $5 which is fine. The cheapest tomatoes I could find were $1.49/lb. I spent over $7 on Cheez Whiz! Bulgarian sheep feta was $5/lb but that's still a good price. Pasta is over $1 box. I got 3 bags of chick peas for $1.25 each though which is an incredible price. Cracker barrel cheese is $2.50 but then I got $1 back from Ibotta. I should go get more. I had to pay $4 for a pound of store brand mozzarella.

I'm not even making dessert this year. I'm too worn out.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-17582526535834087962022-06-19T13:55:00.007-04:002022-06-19T13:55:53.559-04:00I need to go buy groceries after being away for a week
I don't even know what might be on sale because I haven't looked at circulars for 2 weeks (the week before the trip I needed to eat all my inventory). I am very hungry right now, so I hope I find things. Also my trip made me fat, so I hope I find healthy things.

Bravo: Frozen vegetables are 3/$4 for 14 oz bags. Those are good for fried rice. Big cans of tomato paste are 3/$7 but I'm not made out of math to divide things by 7. Seems more expensive than when they used to be 3/$6 though, so I'm not buying that out of spite. Frozen spinach is $1.5 for 14 oz.

Brooklyn Harvest Market: A 12 pack of Sixpoint Hard Seltzer is only $10. I wish they sold the cucumber ones separately because those are great and the rest are ehhh. A pound of hummus is $4, which seems like a good price, but I will just make my own. That's a good idea. Cabot Greek yogurt is $5 for 2 lbs. I haven't bought greek yogurt in a while and I can't remember if I like that brand. Bac'n bits are $2.5, which I could use for the 4th of July.

C-Town: Romaine is $1.49/lb. This is mostly a repeat of Bravo.

Food Bazaar: Limes are 9/$2. Corn tortillas are $1.5. Mussels are finally on sale!

Scallions are 5 bunches/$2 and I should get some because mine all died when I was away. I couldn't find any though because they were either out or a guy stocking the shelves was hiding them. Instead I just got 2 boxes of 100 tea bags each for $2 each.

I went today before breakfast to try again. I did find them. I also got 2 kaiser rolls for $0.40/each. The bread area is so well stocked in the morning! I never go there then. I took the plastic bag I put my last bread purchase in because I still had it and I don't want more plastic in the world.

So now I have my lunch planned. Maybe some of my window herbs are big enough to harvest for a tomato sandwich. Or I can cut up my Vidalia onion.

Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-63043456143044043102022-04-08T11:21:00.004-04:002022-04-08T11:21:41.192-04:00A duck. What to cook with a duck. Side dishes for duck.
The backstory is I got a frozen duck from Gideon for my birthday in December. It is too luxurious to eat by myself, so I stuck it in the freezer. Now it's April and the Omnicron wave around my the end of the year has subsided, the weather is nicer, and it is time to cook a duck.

The first problem with my meal plan is the flip side of it being too lonely to eat a fancy duck by myself. I started by inviting Yasmin. Then I invited Matt and Emily because they also gave me lot of fancy ingredients for my birthday (most of which I still have, and may incorporate into the meal). And I had to invite Gideon of course, but he hasn't told me if he will come. Also, roommates. So I am dealing with not a lot of duck per person and also a lot of uncertainty about how many people I even need.

Two people have suggested I make Peking duck. I do not know how to make this. I am not really sure how to make any duck (that is the point of Gideon's gift.. he gets me weird things I have to figure out). But I especially don't know how to make Peking duck.

I currently think I will make a large amount of some sort of risotto (that was a gift from Matt & Emily) as a first course, then a small serving of duck with a side of some vegetables as a second course. This is basically the Italian meal style. Which means I could flesh it out with an antipasto course. My main risotto ideas are either mushroom (risotto ai funghi), saffron (risotta alla milanese) or to be very weird, strawberry (risotto alle fragole). This one for orange risotto sounds good too. (risotto all'arancia)

The point of this blog post is to take notes while I look through all the grocery circulars to see what is on sale this week and maybe come up with ideas. The title of the blog post was accidentally SEO bait and then I thought it was funny so I made it more baity.

Bravo: Asparagus $2/lb. Mozzarella $3. They don't list them on sale, but they sell bulk white mushrooms for $3/lb which is a pretty good price and I could use a ton of those with a few porcini (gift from Matt & Emily).

Brooklyn Harvest Market: Asparagus. Mozzarella.

C-Town: Asparagus. Mozzarella. All the sales are the same this week. Escarole $2/lb.

Food Bazaar: Lemons 5/$2, but I'm not dealing with that whole store for that.

Ozzie's: Asparagus. Mozzarella is 2/$4 (must buy 2) so at least that is a little different. And ricotta is only $3.

Green Corner: Strawberries $2/lb. Lemons 5/$2 (I will go here just for that).

My Planned Menu

Antipasti: various olives, some cheeses, giardiniera, roasted red peppers, and maybe some sort of crackers

Primo: Risotto ai funghi

Secondo: Orange duck (anatra all'anatra)

Contorno: Escarole or arugula salad with strawberries, gorgonzola
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-79932004119252403022022-04-02T12:22:00.005-04:002022-04-02T12:22:56.889-04:00Grocery Inflation Part 2: Whole Foods
Whole Foods has been the worst for grocery inflation because they don't update the prices on their shelves. They just charge you more. First I got charged $1.99 for my $1.79 tofu. This week, I went back to get 3 liters of olive oil before the quarter ended and my credit card quit giving me 5% on groceries. My $19.99 olive oil rang up as $21.99.

I had happened to take a picture of the shelf of the olive oil so I had the price. So I decided to complain. First I was going to complain to NYC to get them arrested, but there was a line on the form that said "did you try resolving this with the company first?" So I emailed Whole Foods.

Whole Foods ended up refunding me the entire $21.99. Which was a lot more than I would have expected ($2 would have been fair!) but they didn't say "and we will tell the manager to make the prices on the shelves right" so I still don't want to risk shopping there any time soon. But because I have so much olive oil, their plants aren't as good as they were in mid-March, and I got a rosemary at Trader Joe's, and their tofu isn't cheaper anymore, I don't think I need to shop there.
Grocery Chopinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06087584344072834530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21934586.post-15892941344319722162022-03-10T11:10:00.006-05:002022-03-10T11:17:02.951-05:00Grocery Inflation!
Over the years, I have occasionally taken pictures of my receipts and they pop up in my Timehop and I see that most of my prices I used to pay are still similar. Which is surprising. But I have noticed that some things really are more expensive lately. Oil, eggs, and mayonnaise (which is made of oil and eggs) are way up. Meat is generally way up.

And I just saw this peanut butter sale in Bravo's ad next week!

Peanut butter used to be frequently on sale for $2 or $2.49 for a 15-16 oz jar. And now it's 12 oz for that price. The other way inflation gets you. Bags of frozen vegetables are 14 oz instead of 16 at C-Town and Bravo now too.

Here is next week's C-Town ad:

I bought a jar of peanut butter at Trader Joe's recently and remembered why I never liked or buy that.
